Match Result: England gave New Zealand a massive score of 368,(Ben Stokes 182, Malan 96, Boult 5- 51, Lister 3-69) against which New Zealand failed and got all out at 187 (Phillips 72, Livingstone 3-16, Woakes 3-31) and got beaten by 181 runs.

Ben Stokes returned to ODI cricket after 14 months with a bang, scoring his fourth century in the format off just 76 balls. He then went on to claim the highest score in the format by an Englishman with 182 off 124, setting up a crushing victory for England over New Zealand.

Malan made and impressive score of 96 adding a strong contribution for England in creating the massive target of 368 for New Zealand but was unfortunately missed the century.

Boult played a crucial role in England’s Victory. He took 5 wicket against 51 runs and became the highest wicket taker of the match. Following Boult, Lister took 3 wicket against 69 runs and contributed to the the England’s Victory.

Stokes walked out to the crease in the third over with England in trouble at 13 for 2, but he shared a third-wicket stand worth 199 in 165 balls with Dawid Malan. He launched a brutal assault on Lockie Ferguson, looting 56 runs off the 30 balls he faced from him; in total, Ferguson’s nine overs cost 80 runs.

Stokes started frantically, charging down the pitch and skipping outside leg stump to give himself room to play over the off side. He had 13 off 19 when Ferguson came into the attack and he immediately looked to take him on, hitting three boundaries in four balls – one via a thick leading edge – in Ferguson’s second over.

That was enough to get Stokes going, and thereafter he played at a similar tempo to the one he adopted during the Ashes earlier this summer: prodded and scuffed singles interspersed with calculated, dismissive swipes into the stands. The pick of the bunch, a skip-down-and-swing off Glenn Phillips, was caught in the second tier of the Pavilion.

As he battled his knee injury, Stokes opted to stand and deliver. He crunched nine sixes, including six in his final 31 balls. When he holed out to square leg, attempting to hit a tenth, the sell-out crowd stood to applaud the hero of England’s 2019 World Cup triumph, no doubt imbued with the belief that he could yet inspire them to a successful defence of their title in India.

Stokes’ innings was the centerpiece of a brilliant batting performance by England, who posted a total of 368 for 6. Malan played a superb supporting role, scoring 96 off 95 balls, while Jos Buttler (38 off 24) and Moeen Ali (31 off 26) also made significant contributions.

New Zealand’s response was never really up to scratch, and they were bowled out for 187 in 39.3 overs. Chris Woakes was the pick of the England bowlers with 3 for 31, while Liam Livingstone took 3 for 37.

The victory gave England a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series. The fourth match will be played at Lord’s on Friday.
