Ganesh Chaturthi Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is a ten-day festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom and auspicious beginnings. It is one of the most popular festivals in India and is celebrated with great pomp and fervor.

Lord Ganesh is believed to be born during Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, Ganesh Chaturthi currently falls in month of August or September according to English calendar.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, is consider to be of 10 days and ends on Anant Chaturdashi which is also known as Ganesh Visarjan day. On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in water body like river, pond or other water bodies whichever is available after a gala street procession.

It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Madhyahna Kala. Madhyahna Kala means midday or afternoon according to Hindu division of the day.
As per Vedic astrology Madhyahna Kala is considered as the most appropriate time for Ganesha Puja. Ganapati Sthapana and Ganapati Puja on Ganesha Chaturthi are done during Madhyahna part of the day.

How to Celebrate

On the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees install idols of Lord Ganesha made of clay in their homes, some also install public pandals. The idols are worshipped and decorate it with flowers, garlands, and other offerings. Devotees chant prayers and mantras of Lord Ganesha and offer him his favorite foods, such as modaks and ladoos.

One can see great enthusiasm and joy while the celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. People gather in pandals to sing, dance, and participate in cultural programs. They also install food and religious souvenirs stalls.

Lord Ganesha are immersed in rivers or lakes on the tenth day of the festival. This ritual is known as Ganesh Visarjan and symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s return to his heavenly abode.
